(Prep work for February’s monthlies project)
From the Archives: Self Portrait, Albany NY. November 2010.
I’m heading back up to Albany for a couple of days again next week, which will mark my fifth (or is it sixth…) trip to that strange little place. I always try to shoot there as much as possible, and I always find it really difficult. It has all the makings of a regular city, except that the streets are largely empty of people, even during the busiest parts of the day; the whole centre seems to be a weird mix of dead buildings and sparcely-strewn bars, with a few hotels and expensive restaurants dotted around, presumably to cater to the politicos who fly in, waste everyone’s time and money, then fly out again. There’s just something inherently confusing about the place, though I still can’t figure out what it is.
November Monthlies
Up now, on alexjdsmith.com.
The end of this year will mark two solid years of doing the monthlies, and I’m considering ending the format once 2011 is done. I want to try something different for 2012; some alternative way of presenting my ongoing diaristic shots. I’m also thinking of collating the highlights from the last couple of years into some sort of publication, perhaps one for each year. I suspect the personal nature of these images gives them far more meaning for me than for anyone else, but it could be an interesting experiment in publishing at least.
Of course, I may just change my mind completely and carry on doing the exact same thing next year; after all, there is a certain comfort in routine, isn’t there?
